Thuggery to you and me but not The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union or The Judge

One has to feel for Bay of Plenty rugby player Simon Chisholm.

Eight months after being punched unconscious during a senior grade game he suffers daily headaches and could die if he suffers another blow to the head.

The player that punched him from behind in a cowardly attack was Uenuku Pieta, 22, who was playing for the Te Puna club & admitted a charge of assault with intent to injure.

The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union has banned Pieta for this season - little more than a pathetic slap on the wrist given the severity of the on field assault.

Chisholm can never play again and has on-going health issues.

The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union may as well link their web site to the local soccer association given they have single-handily gifted the code a new crop of children.

Patently The Bay of Plenty Rugby Union cares little for player welfare given a thug like Pieta will be roaming its playing fields in a little over 12 months.

Now to the second point stemming from this case; namely the weak sentence.

Mealy mouthed Judge Louis Bidois sentenced Pieta to a paltry 200 hours' community work on a charge of assault with intent to injure and ordered $500 reparation = piss all in other-words.

What Judge Bidos is saying is to Kiwis with his weak sentencing is: assaults on a sporting field are different to those out in the public.

You can do what you like on a sporting field and suffer next to no ramifications.

What would I and most Kiwi's have expected to happen here?

One: A Life Ban.

Two: 12 months jail and reparations in five figures.

Footnote: Back in 2007 here’s what The Bay of Plenty Times had to say about  Judge Louis Bidois “Returning to his roots, Judge Bidois was also welcomed home to Poututerangi Marae in Te Puna on Sunday - the home marae of his Pirirakau hapu of Ngati Ranginui” Te Puna? That name sounds familiar?

  1. 2 things, that no doubt you'll also delete. You should actually accurately write the article, What Uenuku did was thuggery, no doubt! However, Chisholm is back playing rugby.. that is great news, so don't try to over hype the story by saying he will NEVER play again. That is just a lie!
You are questioning the integrity of a very highly respected and honorable man Louis Bidois, That is disgraceful and you should be as ashamed as Uenuku

  2. You are right Chisholm is back playing rugby, at the time I reported his prognosis was poor as stated.

Ironically he was sent off for punching another player in just his second game back!

So I got him all wrong.

He deserved little to no sympathy given he clearly embraces on-field thuggery.

    Thanks for your comments.

  3. The point is, your article stats 'Chisholm can never play again and has on going health issues' That is (excuse the pun) a beat-up, more than likely from Chisholm himself... But never accurate
Chisholm has a history of this behaviour and it got to Uenuku on the day. I hope Chisolm now gets the same treatment Uenuku had to face.
Also you should retract your implaction that Louis Bidois had bias in his judgement and decision, Questioning his integrity is dicgraceful.
    Thanks for the reply...

  4. See every one was feeling sorry for chisholm not knowing who he really was as a player he has be a thuggish player the majority of his playing career but never got any criticism for it as within they bay clubs such as te puke and other high profile clubs get special treatment as i know for a fact he has had several scuffles and incidents like this before where he has had physical encounters with other players so it begs to answer the question that chisholm may be the common dinominator as sevral people have had such encounters..although what happened wasnt right at all and peita should serve some punishment chisholm is a shear disgrace for crying out that he may die if he gets hit again or that peita has taken away rugby from him.TOTAL EMBARASSMENT!!!

  5. Points taken onboard.

I happened to employ the term 'embarrassment' as well in my follow-up blog.

    Thanks for enlightening us further.
